A Love of Teaching

I make pottery because I love clay, and I teach pottery because I love sharing and helping others learn and have fun. Teaching is a way to help guide others to find their own way with clay, to express their inner creativity.

I began working as a Studio Assistant at the Ann Arbor Art Center in 1999, and in 2006 began teaching classes in wheel throwing, hand building, surface decoration, brush making and drum making for both adults and children.

It's very rewarding and inspiring when a student has that "ah ha moment", when they "get it". Some are happy to make a bowl, a cup, or something sculptural. Others find a connection to their undiscovered inner creativity and are hooked on clay.

I grew up in Seoul, Korea where I received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1983. In 1988 I moved to the US where I gained my foundation in ceramics at the University of Alabama in the late 1990's. I have been fortunate to continue my studies since moving to Ann Arbor. After completing a two-year internship I was elected to full membership at the Ann Arbor Potter's Guild.

Inspiration for art comes from our experiences. My love of blues and greens comes from experiencing the natural beauty along the 400-mile long Natchez Trace trail between Nashville, TN and Natchez, MS.

I love the bright blue skies and laughter of children, both of which are often expressed in my art.
